Chai Latte, this seasons must have drink!

| by Vendy and Rahman

Masala Chai is a flavoured tea beverage made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs. Originating in India, chai latte is the staple drink in all Indian homes traditionally served as the first drink of the day. The beverage has gained worldwide popularity becoming increasingly popular in the UK in recent years partly due to the success of the “London Coffee Festival” hosted annually in Shoreditch.

Although traditionally prepared by a decoction of green cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, ground ginger, and black peppercorn together with black tea leaves, retail versions include tea bags for infusion, instant powdered mixtures, and concentrates. In some places the term “chai,” alone, can refer to the beverage.

In India the fresh spices (crushed or ground) include clove, ginger, cinnamon and cardamon pods. So if you want to experience the chai latte with fresh spices as it should really be drunk, be sure to make India your holiday destination this year! Here in the UK we use a marsala spiced blend which encompasses and reflects the rich and steeped tradition of chai from its origins in the Himalayas and Southern Asia.
